Nick is a world traveler and musician for The Johnny Freelance Experience. I am a fan of his work on flickr and his music, and the pleasure to do an online interview.
Why did you choose shooting film as your only aesthetic?
I find film familiar, i grew up in the analog world and my eye feels pleasure when looking at analog photos. I find digital dull and somewhat soulless. (sorry if i offend and digital photographers) shooting with film is a way of life for me and there is a creative process behind it that for me gives more of a story to each and every photo and a respect. I respect all photos, a good photo is a good photo. But just knowing someone is shooting on analog cameras and doing there own processing makes me alittle more interested in what they are doing.
Do you feel like analog invites more of an open conversation on photography? Or perhaps connects you to a better community?
Sure. As I'm sure digital can too. but i find i have more in common with purists, as in people who still use film.
What stories do you like to tell and what was process to actualization as an artist?
I'm not sure i understand the question. Pretty much every photo mine has a story and if not i make one up hahahahaa. Process to actualization of an artist? i guess i like "Nike's" slogan. "just do it".
Nope. You totally understood it.
How did you get your start as a jazz musician?
Jazz musician!! ?? hahahaha im very far from calling myself a jazz musician. I have no studies nor do i have patience or self discipline to be in the category of a jazz musician. I'm a good liar on my instrument, i got a good tone and attitude.
Looked you up and listened to your bands music. I was already honored to have the chance to interview you, now I am super stoked!!!! You do have rhythm and attitude.
hahaha!! thanks!
Who are you influenced by alive, and post posthumously?
Well, more than musicians im influenced by the public, the places I am, the food I eat, alcohol i drink and by my band members, when i see Afrika (the singer) dancing, sweating, putting smiles on people's faces and Didi (the drummer) playing his ass off, keeping the groove and making people dance. I'd say thats a bigger influence than stating names of current musicians.
post posthumously, my grandfather Abby Mattas. he was a saxophone and clarinet player. I feel he is always with me when im playing. Oh and of course Miles Davis.
I love looking at bruce davidson, elliot erwitt's work they are masters. I love the work and way of Alberto Garcia Alix. He makes amazing portraits and more than that I love to watch him work, he really gets into his picture, sweats and is completely focused. The sneaky hip shooting of the Catalan Joan Colom got me into the world of leica cameras. i was living in the ravel where he used to shoot in the 50's, I use his teqniques to this day. I adore the work of Junku Nishimura. More than work, it is a document of his life and way of being, there are no tricks to him. Every time i go to japan we meet up for drinks and chat about life. Josef Koudelka, Lee Friedlander, Martin Parr, Rene Greobli, Araki and Anders Petersen have also had a big influence on me.
As for posthumously. Cartier Bresson, Masahisa Fukase, Robert Capa, W. Eugene Smith,
You've got quite the list.
I really enjoy how you see and life as a creative experience. How do you feel about the international photography community as a whole? Are there current any projects you are working on?
Thank you very much Justin! International photography community? hmm well to tell you the truth i dont really care.... hahahahaa. I think there are alot of bad photos out there. especially with the whole digital era. instagram, facebook, tumbler etc. But I am a big flickr fan. I love flickr for many reasons, I have met some really cool people on there and I love to see how these people grow and revolution. there are aloooot of "photographers" out there. I dont think of myself as a photographer. I like to just document my life, friends and my surroundings. I really like shooting, its an addiction and i love cameras as objects. I'm a collector. I especially like leicas.
projects..well, I finally left spain, I was living there 13 years. I'm now located in Warsaw, Poland. Which I love, such a cool city and so tropical! hahaa. I'm shooting alot in my neighborhood, its called Ochota. One of the only areas where you can see old buildings from before the war. I started to jog in the mornings with a small compact ricoh gr loaded with color film, haha I'm interested to see what comes out of that idea. I will return to Japan in April so i will continue with that series. Im also thinking about a project in Lapland, Finland next winter involving hunters and booze.
Nick Thank you for your time!
